Year 2

Construction

Due to the construction of our new school, year 2 children have focussed our learning around a theme of construction. We have seized the opportunity to study the many vehicles we have had on site and have learnt about their functions. We have had builders come into the classes to explain their roles and responsibilities.

We have completed paintings, ink work and pencil work pictures of a variety of construction vehicles.

In small world, we have written extended captions about construction vehicles and building sites. We have been using our knowledge of non-fiction texts to create information booklets. Some of us have used the small world to create a short movie that has been entered into the roscars competition.

We have been doing many activities related to construction. We have taken on different positions within the builing trade to help us achiev our learning. Here are a few of them...

In the sand area, we have been constructing a phonic road using the graphemes ai, ay and a-e.   We have been designing and constructing buildings for our new school in our role play area. We pretended that the roamer was a construction vehicle and programmed the roamer to move around the building site.

We have been pretending to mix cement in our sand area. We have had to measure amounts carefully.   We have found out that once our new school has been built an electrician will visit to install all the lights. We have been learning to make circuits to understand what an electrician has to do.
